Cabernet Sauvignon – Syrah is a classic combination of two great red-wine varieties. It has become so popular in Australia (where Syrah is known as Shiraz), that it is nicknamed by some as "The Great Australian Red Blend".
Best known for its commanding role in the wines of Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon provides much of the framework in this blend, but is often said to be lacking in the mid-palate (this is known as "the doughnut effect"). Happily, Australian-grown Shiraz is famously good at providing juicy, jammy fruit flavors that fill out the mid-palate. The two combine to create complex wines full of bright berry and dark fruit flavors.
